4.0 out of 5 starsAmazing sound but needs receiver rated for 4 ohms
December 1, 2017Style: Bookshelf Loudspeakers|Verified Purchase
Great sounding bookshelf speaker designed by Andrew Jones. I am using 4 for a small room in a 5.1.2 setup. Be warned, though, these are 4 ohm speakers and most receivers are rated to a minimum of 6 ohms. I had ordered a Sony STRDN1080 but had to return in favor of the Pioneer Elite SC-LX501 which was the only receiver I could find in the sub $600 price range (on sale). I am happy with the set up even though I ended up paying a couple hundred more for the amp. If I were to do it over I would opt for the Sony STRDN1080 and ELAC Debut speakers which are also Andrew Jones design. The 4 ohm issue is the only reason I am giving four stars instead of five.

5.0 out of 5 starsBought when on sale for $450!

Bought these beauties last week on sale for $450 dollars. I could not be happier. I haven't listened to a concentric driver before purchasing these, and let me tell you they are everything you'd expect and more. I'm used to there being compromise with speakers where the bass at higher volumes starts to drown out the mids. Since the mid range has its own driver, this is no longer a problem. I am not sure if they will ever drop back down to $450 here, but am I sure glad I jumped on them. P.S. I know they're not in the same price range, but they blow away the Audioengine A5+, and even the Audioengine HD6's that I ended up returning. Yes with an amp/receiver added in they cost more, but the HD6 is $750 so at the price I got them, I have 300 left for a stereo receiver, which would blow the Audioengines away for the same price. Could not be happier

5.0 out of 5 starsThis is for the EBS73 bookshelf, center, and subwoofer speakers

So these speakers have been all the buzz over the last year, winning many awards and rated in many top 10 speaker reviews. It's not surprising considering Andrew Jones designed it. (Google Andrew jones if you don't know who he is). This uses his concentric driver design, similar to the TAD $80,000 speakers he developed. At this price I had to hear it for myself and it does not disappoint.
Let's first start off by saying that these are 4ohm speakers. They are power hungry. So they HAVE to have an amplifier that can handle 4ohm loads. Bear in mind MOST home receivers cannot handle these speakers. Basically class AB amps can't handle 4ohm loads efficiently. You need a minimum of a class D amp, like pioneer elite lines, maybe the top top Denon/Yamaha brands. You will stress and shorten the life of your amp if it's not 4ohm capable, and even if you think it sounds good, it doesn't compared to an amp that can give it the proper power. (Google class AB versus D amps). Almost any 4ohm rated speaker is a sign of a powerful speaker, and most of the time a sign of a higher end speaker. (Not always, but almost always). If you don't have a high end receiver or amp I wouldn't even consider these speakers, look for an 8ohm capable speaker instead.
That being said, these speakers are amazing. The detail is simply jaw dropping, especially for this price. I also own the Polk LSi15's (top of the line speakers) cost 3x's more, and these pioneer bookshelf speakers blow away my polks. Don't let the simple design fool you, these speakers mean business! Know will be replacing my Polk lsi series speakers for these elites. All except the subwoofer. You want a sub that can go down to 20hz, and the elite sub does not. You will have improved sound from a better sub like the SVS subs.
I have not been able to test the atmos setup yet, but will soon. The more these speakers break in the better they keep sounding. Most magnolia centers will have this elite setup in their theater showroom. Ask for a demo you won't be disappointed. Also just google these speakers, there hasn't been a professional bad review yet, in fact it's the opposite. As an amateur audiophile I recommend these speakers IF you have the amp to drive them.
I have since purchased the elite center speaker and elite subwoofer. The subwoofer is a huge improvement over the pioneer mk8 sub. Although it's rated down to 30hz it hits hard and rattles my windows. Something the regular pioneer didn't do. Overall I'm happy with it. And the center speaker is amazing as the rest of the speaker line. Great buy and the entire line was on sale for about 40% off last week.
